Xstrata Engineering Graduate Program
Xstrata offers Engineering Graduate Opportunities in vast array of disciplines:
- Mining
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Civil
- Environmental
- Geotechnical
Before a new mine starts or an existing mine is extended, it is the Mining Engineers who assess its viability and prepare plans for the type, size, location and construction of the site. At established mining operations, mining engineers plan, manage and control all engineering aspects of the mining production process.
Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineers are involved in both surface and underground mining.
While Mechanical Engineers design, develop, manufacture and maintain a diverse range of products and systems including but not limited to drilling machinery, electrical generators, conveyor belts, pumping plants, winding equipment, turbines, ventilation systems and mineral processing plant.
The Electrical Engineers, on the other hand design, develop and supervise the manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical systems as well as they work on systems for the generation, distribution, utilisation and optimal application of electrical energy.
Civil Engineers are involved in the design, development, project management and maintainance a diverse range of infrastructure in areas such as concentrators, smelters, filter plants, underground areas and key services. This work typically comprises but is not limited to water management, concrete, masonry and steel works, structural audits, maintenance programs and is split predominantly between capital and operating expenditure.
Environmental Engineers assess, implement and manage processes for minimising the effects of human activity on the natural environment. They apply their specialist knowledge and skills to developing robust environmental management systems, conducting environmental impact assessments and actively working to control all forms of pollution.
Geotechnical Engineers are concerned with the mechanical behaviour of rock and rock masses, applying the principles of engineering mechanics to the design of a mining excavation e.g. tunnels, mine shafts, underground excavations and open pit mines. They investigates the ground conditions and determines how to safely, efficiently and economically create excavations in the rock.
